Trolltunga or Troll's Tongue

Trolltunga is one of the most spectacular scenic cliffs in Norway and Tripadvisor has named Trolltunga as one of the world’s ten most amazing destinations. Take a trip to find out why - but be aware that it is a long and demanding hike.

Trolltunga is a spectacular rock formation 1,100 metres above sea level that projects horizontally out from the mountainside some 700 metres above Ringedals Lake in Skjeggedal nearby Tyssedal in Odda municipality.

Plan your trip some time between mid-June and the end of September, due to snow conditions in the mountains. This is also peak season for our hotel, so book your stay early. Do not hike to Trolltunga in wintertime! From March you can join guided snowshoe hikes with Trolltunga Active. (*)

You can order transportation to Skjeggedal/ Trolltunga online Shuttlebus Hardanger. Daily departures from 13. May - 1. November.

We suggest that you arrive at Hotel Ullensvang the day before you plan to take the hike. Order a large packed lunch with fruit, chocolate and drink the evening before so you do not have to wait in the morning.

After a good night's sleep and a delicious breakfast, you are ready for the drive to Skjeggedal near Tyssedal in Odda municipality. The drive takes around 25 minutes. The hike to Trolltunga starts in Skjeggedal. We recommend starting the hike from Skjeggedal at the latest by 08.00. The hike up and down again takes between 10 - 12 hours. The classic trail is 14 km one way and the height differences is around 1,000 metres. The trail is marked from the parking lot in Skjeggedal to Trolltunga. Along the trail there are signs showing the distance left to Trolltunga.

If you start the hike at 08.00, you should have time to get back to the hotel in time for dinner (served from 19.00 to 21.00). After a long hike followed by a good meal with drinks, there is nothing better than a comfortable bed to sleep in. After breakfast the following day, you can relax in the hotel’s wellness area and swimming pools.
